406 distress beacons

406 beacons save lives - make sure your beacon is registered, watch for inadvertent activations and dispose of it correctly.

Project goals

  • To promote the carriage of GPS beacons within the marine environment and the requirement to update registration every two years

  • To limit the number of non-compliance with the requirement to carry proof of beacon registration

  • To promote the correct storage of beacons to prevent misuse of beacons, which result in inadvertent alerts

  • To limit the number of beacons that have been incorrectly disposed of, which can result in the inadvertent activation of the SAR system
